Technical Details
The cause of non-infectious airway inflammation in stabled horses is not completely understood, but it is more than likely that environmental dust and antigens have a significant part to play.
Most performance and working horses spend twenty two hours or more of every day stabled. With respect to comfort, horses and people are usually comfortable until the ambient temperature approaches 25°C, the upper limit of the thermo neutral zone. Once the temperature reaches this level, – horses and the people who look after them start to feel considerably less comfortable.
Horses that rest in a comfortable environment recover more quickly from transport, training and competition , as demonstrated at the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong. There is also increasing evidence that external air quality can also impact negatively on equine respiratory health. Sadly, whilst we know that air quality in stables is usually poor, the air outside is rarely that much better. Whilst heart disease is the most common cause of death in people, human asthma is the most common disease in the world.
Scientific study
Does stabling young horses and feeding them hay induce airway inflammation?
The experiment
18 month old Arabian horses were housed for three months either in the stable or at pasture.
The level of airway inflammation was evaluated monthly.
The results
It was found that the horses kept stabled showed an increased number of neutrophils in the air passages and suffered from prolongation of upper airway inflammation; inflammation of the guttural pouches.
The conclusion
Environmental dusts and antigens play a distinct role in poor equine respiratory health.
